Elon will accept the award on December 1, 2020, at the Axel Springer headquarters in Berlin. The theme of the evening is “An Evening for Elon Musk – Mission to Mars.” |
Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer SE: “As one of the most creative entrepreneurs and most brilliant engineers of the digital age, Elon Musk inspires an entire generation. He combines great visions with the indomitable will to achieve them. With PayPal, SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk has turned entire industries upside down, and his drive is irrepressible. He is motivated by the goal of making life better for humanity. And not in small steps, but by fundamentally turning the way we do things on their head. With incredible success.”
Elon is the visionary behind Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company, among others.
As co-founder and CEO of Tesla, he spearheads the company’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. He leads product design, engineering and manufacturing across the entire company. Tesla’s products include electric vehicles, batteries, energy storage and solar. As the founder and Chief Engineer at SpaceX, Elon oversees development of the world’s most technologically advanced rockets and spacecraft for missions to Earth orbit and ultimately to carry humans to Mars and other destinations in the solar system. Only a few months ago, SpaceX was the first commercial company in history to transport NASA astronauts to the International Space Station and return them safely back home to Earth. SpaceX is also working on Starlink, a space-based internet system which will deliver high speed broadband to locations around the world where access has been unreliable, unaffordable, or completely unavailable. In 2016, Elon founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company dedicated to developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect the human brain to computers.
Later that same year, Elon started The Boring Company, which combines fast, affordable tunneling technology with an all-electric public transportation system to alleviate urban congestion and enable high-speed, long-distance travel.
Previously, Elon co-founded the world’s leading Internet payment service, PayPal, and Zip2, one of the first Internet map and route planner services.
Through his private foundation, Elon promotes research into renewable energies, space travel, pediatrics, STEM education, and safe artificial intelligence, and as a private individual he provides significant financial support to numerous charitable causes.
Elon is the fifth winner of the Axel Springer Award, with which the company annually honors outstanding personalities who are innovative in an extraordinary way, who create and change markets and who shape culture while at the same time shouldering their social responsibility. The award recognizes achievements to date and encourages them to develop these further. The previous winners of the Axel Springer Award were Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook; Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web; Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon and owner of the “Washington Post;” and the economist and author Shoshana Zuboff. The format of the event is always tailored to the individual honoree.
